Émile Zola publicó Germinal en 1885 dentro de Los Rougon-Macquart, su ciclo de veinte novelas sobre una familia del Segundo Imperio. Étienne Lantier, un mecánico sin trabajo, llega una gélida noche de marzo a la mina de carbón del Voreux, cerca de Montsou, en el norte de Francia. Consigue trabajo bajo tierra junto a la familia Maheu y ve cómo viven los mineros con sueldos que apenas dan para comer. Cuando la compañía recorta la paga, Étienne empieza a hablar de huelga.
