Alain-Fournier

Estimated B2578 min · 69 parts · 418 words to learn

Un pensionnaire suit le souvenir d'une fête perdue et d'un domaine presque irréel.

About the book

Le Grand Meaulnes, published in 1913, is the only novel by Alain-Fournier, who was killed the following year in the First World War. François Seurel, the son of a village schoolmaster in central France, tells how a tall new boarder, Augustin Meaulnes, arrives at the school. One winter day Meaulnes goes missing, and returns with the memory of a lost estate, a strange celebration and a girl he cannot forget. He then sets out to find the way back.

Reading it as a learner

We estimate it at B2. The French is not difficult word by word, but the tone is dreamy, and the narration moves between the imparfait of memory and the passé simple of events. Expect countryside vocabulary: carts, farms, classrooms, ponds and winter roads. The 46 chapters are short and carry titles, giving 69 ten-minute parts. Tap a word to see its meaning and keep the mood of the story.
