Germinal
Émile Zola
Dans le pays minier, la faim et la colère poussent les ouvriers vers la grève.
About the book
Émile Zola published Germinal in 1885, as part of his twenty-novel Rougon-Macquart cycle about a family under the Second Empire. Étienne Lantier, an unemployed mechanic, arrives on a bitter March night at the Voreux coal mine near Montsou in northern France. He finds work underground beside the Maheu family and sees how miners live on wages that barely feed them. As hunger grows and the company cuts pay, Étienne begins to talk about a strike.
Reading it as a learner
We estimate it at C1, and it is the longest French book on the shelf: 40 chapters in 169 ten-minute parts. Zola describes mine work in technical detail, so you will learn words for tunnels, wagons, shifts and tools, and his miners speak a rough, direct French. Descriptions can run for pages. It also teaches the most vocabulary of any French book here. Tap any word to see its meaning.
