Madame Bovary
Gustave Flaubert
Emma cherche dans le rêve, l'amour et le luxe une vie plus grande que la sienne.
About the book
Gustave Flaubert published Madame Bovary in 1857, and was put on trial for offending public morals before being acquitted. Emma, a farmer's daughter raised on romantic novels, marries Charles Bovary, a kind and dull country doctor in Normandy. Life in a small town gives her none of the passion and elegance she read about. She looks for them in daydreams, in other men and in expensive purchases, while the townspeople around her watch and talk.
Reading it as a learner
We estimate it at C1. Flaubert is a model of precise French, and that precision is the difficulty: he chooses exact nouns for clothes, furniture and food, and often slips into Emma's thoughts without quotation marks. You will also see constant switching between the imparfait for habits and backgrounds and the passé simple for events. Here the novel runs to 32 chapters in 108 ten-minute parts.
