Verbs followed by -ing or the infinitive

  1. Kalıp fiile aittir

    Verb pattern (fiil kalıbı), bir fiilin arkasından hangi yapının geleceğini gösterir: to'lu fiil mi, -ing mi, to'suz fiil mi, yoksa önce bir nesne mi. Kalıp fiile aittir ve Türkçeden çıkarılamaz; her fiil kalıbıyla birlikte öğrenilmelidir. Beş ana kalıp vardır.

  2. Fiil + to'lu fiil

    (1) Fiil + to'lu fiil: karar, niyet ve plan fiilleri. decide, hope, manage, offer, plan, promise, refuse, agree, afford. We decided to buy the tickets, She managed to solve the problem.

  3. Fiil + kişi + to'lu fiil

    (2) Fiil + kişi + to'lu fiil: birini yönlendiren, uyaran ya da ikna eden fiiller. tell, ask, remind, warn, encourage, persuade, invite, advise, expect. She reminded me to lock the door, The doctor advised him to rest. Bu fiillerde kişi atlanamaz.

  4. Fiil + -ing

    (3) Fiil + -ing: zevk, kaçınma ve düşünme fiilleri. enjoy, avoid, consider, fancy, finish, imagine, suggest, practise. I enjoy working in the garden.

  5. Fiil + edat + -ing

    (4) Fiil + edat + -ing: edattan sonra gelen fiil hep -ing alır. apologize for, insist on, look forward to, succeed in, think of. She apologized for arriving late, I look forward to hearing from you.

  6. Let ve make

    (5) Fiil + kişi + to'suz fiil: let (izin vermek) ve make (zorlamak, yaptırmak). She let me borrow her car, He made us laugh. Türkçede “beni güldürdü” derken ettirgen ek kullanırız; İngilizcede bu anlamı make + to'suz fiil verir.

1. Name the relationship

Ask whether the sentence gives a condition, contrast, cause, report, or result.

If it rains, we will stay home.

2. Separate time from aspect

Finished event, visible result, duration, and background action use different forms.

3. Test both clauses

In complex sentences, the second half often proves the first half.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Make passive yapıldığında to geri gelir: I was made to wait for an hour. Let'in passive'i yoktur; yerine be allowed to kullanılır: We were allowed to leave early. Help iki kalıbı da alır ve anlam değişmez: She helped me carry the bags ile She helped me to carry the bags ikisi de doğrudur.
