Reported speech

  1. Doğru aktarma fiilini seçmek

    İleri düzeyde dolaylı anlatım, zaman kaydırma alıştırmasından çıkar ve doğru aktarma fiilini seçme becerisine dönüşür. Birinin sözlerini hep said that ile aktarmak yerine, konuşanın niyetini tek bir fiille özetlemek gerekir: “I'll definitely help you” cümlesi She promised to help me, “You should see a doctor” cümlesi He advised me to see a doctor olur.

  2. That ve to'lu fiil kalıpları

    Aktarma fiilleri arkalarından gelen yapıya göre gruplanır ve her birinin kalıbı ayrı ezberlenmelidir.

    (1) Fiil + that cümlesi: admit, insist, mention, argue, explain.

    (2) Fiil + to'lu fiil: agree, offer, promise, threaten, refuse.

  3. Kişi + to'lu fiil

    (3) Fiil + kişi + to'lu fiil: advise, encourage, remind, urge, warn, forbid, persuade.

  4. -ing ve edat + -ing

    (4) Fiil + -ing: deny, recommend, regret, suggest, admit.

    (5) Fiil + edat + -ing: apologize for, accuse someone of, congratulate someone on, insist on, blame someone for.

  5. Zaman kaydırma ve yalın fiil

    Aktarılan bilgi hâlâ geçerliyse ya da konuşan onun doğruluğunu onaylıyorsa zaman kaydırmak zorunlu değildir: She told me she works in Izmir, hâlâ orada çalışıyorsa. Resmi dilde insist, recommend, demand ve suggest'ten sonra gelen that cümlesinde fiil yalın kalır: The committee recommended that he step down.

At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.

1. Decide what is foregrounded

Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.

What matters is the evidence.

2. Check register

Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.

Not only did she win, but she broke the record.

3. Watch compressed clauses

Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.

Having finished, we left.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

İstisnalar

Tell ve remind'dan sonra kişi mutlaka gelir: He told me that …, He reminded us to …. Explain, mention ve say ise kişiyi doğrudan almaz; kişi to ile bağlanır: She explained to us why the flight was late; “She explained us” yanlıştır. Aktarılan sorularda, düz dolaylı anlatımda olduğu gibi, normal cümle sırası kullanılır ve do, does, did düşer: He wanted to know why I had left.
