Reflexive pronouns

Yıkanmak ve giyinmek gibi gündelik bakım fiilleri İngilizcede dönüşlü zamir almaz: I shaved and dressed denir, I shaved myself denmez.

Kural

  1. Kendim, kendin, kendisi

    Dönüşlü zamirler (reflexive pronouns), işi yapan ile işten etkilenen aynı kişi olduğunda kullanılır. Türkçedeki “kendim, kendin, kendisi” kelimelerine karşılık gelirler. Tekil: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself. Çoğul: ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

  2. İşi kendine yapmak

    Üç temel kullanımı vardır.

    (1) Kişi işi kendine yapar: She cut herself while slicing bread, He taught himself to play the guitar.

  3. Vurgu için

    (2) Vurgu için, “bizzat, kendisi” anlamında: The president herself signed the treaty, I baked this bread myself. Bu kullanımda zamir çıkarılsa da cümle doğru kalır; yalnızca vurgu kaybolur.

  4. By + dönüşlü zamir

    (3) By + dönüşlü zamir “tek başına, kimsenin yardımı olmadan” demektir: My grandmother lives by herself, Did you travel to Lisbon by yourself? Türkçedeki “kendi kendine” ifadesi buna çok yakındır.

1. Look for the time clue

Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.

I watched it yesterday.

2. Choose the pattern first

Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

I am going to study.

3. Check word position

Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

I know him well.

Pronoun forms

English pronouns change by grammatical job: subject, object, possession, or reflexive meaning.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

İstisnalar

Türkçede “yıkandım, giyindim” dediğimiz gündelik bakım fiilleri İngilizcede dönüşlü zamir almaz: wash, shave, dress ve relax tek başına kullanılır. I shaved and dressed quickly denir, I shaved myself and dressed myself denmez. Dönüşlü zamir ile each other de karıştırılmamalıdır: themselves herkesin kendine yaptığını, each other ise karşılıklılığı anlatır. They looked at themselves in the mirror (herkes kendine baktı), They looked at each other (birbirlerine baktılar).
