Past simple with a time anchor

  1. Bitmiş zaman, past simple

    Bazı zaman ifadeleri bir olayı geçmişte bitmiş, belli bir ana sabitler. Cümlede böyle bir ifade varsa İngilizcede past simple kullanılır; present perfect kullanılmaz. Türkçede “Onu dün gördüm” ile “Onu gördüm” aynı -di ekiyle kurulur, bu yüzden Türk öğrenci bu ayrımı çoğu zaman hissetmez.

  2. Yesterday, last, ago

    En sık kullanılan bitmiş zaman ifadeleri şunlardır:

    (1) yesterday ve türevleri: yesterday, yesterday morning, yesterday evening. Dün gece için ise yesterday night değil last night denir.

    (2) last + zaman: last week, last month, last year, last summer, last Tuesday.

    (3) sayı + ago: two hours ago, three days ago, ten years ago.

  3. In, on, at ve when

    (4) in + bitmiş yıl, ay ya da mevsim: in 2022, in July, in winter.

    (5) on + bitmiş gün ya da tarih: on Monday, on May 4th.

    (6) at + saat: at 7:30, at midnight.

    (7) when ile kurulan yan cümleler: when I was ten, when we visited Rome.

  4. Cümledeki yeri

    Yapı: özne + past simple fiil + zaman ifadesi. Zaman ifadesi başa da alınabilir: Last year, we moved to Ankara.

1. Look for the time clue

Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.

I watched it yesterday.

2. Choose the pattern first

Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

3. Check word position

Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

I know him well.

Past simple

Use it for finished past events with a closed time frame.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

İstisnalar

Ago her zaman süreden sonra gelir ve bugünden geriye doğru sayar: ten minutes ago, two years ago. Türkçedeki “iki yıl önce” sırası burada işe yarar, ama “before two years” denmez. When ve what time ile başlayan sorular belli, bitmiş bir anı sorduğu için past simple ister: When did you arrive? denir, When have you arrived? denmez.
