Past continuous
Past continuous (sürekli geçmiş zaman), geçmişte bir anda sürmekte olan eylemi anlatır; genellikle daha kısa bir eylem ya da zaman noktası onu böler. Burada was/were + -ing yapısını ve past simple ile ilişkisini çalışırsın.

Geçmişte süren an
Past continuous, geçmişte belli bir anda sürmekte olan eylemleri ve durumları anlatır. Türkçedeki “-iyordu” yapısına karşılık gelir: “Saat sekizde kitap okuyordum.”
Was ya da were + -ing
Yapı: özne + was ya da were + fiil-ing. I, he, she, it ile was (I was reading a book at eight o'clock), you, we, they ile were kullanılır (They were playing football in the afternoon). Olumsuz biçimleri wasn't ve weren't'tır.
Kesintiye uğrayan eylem
Anlatımda üç temel görevi vardır.
(1) Kesintiye uğrayan eylem: uzun bir arka plan eylemi, past simple ile anlatılan kısa bir olayla bölünür. I was walking to the bus stop when it started to rain.
Aynı anda ve belli bir saatte
(2) Aynı anda süren iki eylem: While my mother was cooking dinner, my father was setting the table.
(3) Belli bir saatte süren eylem: At seven o'clock yesterday morning, I was driving to the airport.
When ve while
Bağlaçlar: when genellikle kısa past simple olayını, while ya da as ise uzun arka plan eylemini başlatır: when the phone rang, while we were sleeping.

At A2, the challenge is choosing between similar time frames, pronouns, and quantity patterns.
1. Look for the time clue
Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.
I watched it yesterday.
2. Choose the pattern first
Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

3. Check word position
Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

- 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
- 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.

Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

İstisnalar
Know, believe, understand, see, hear, belong ve remember gibi durum fiilleri bir süreyi anlatsa bile past continuous almaz: I knew him well when I lived in Leeds denir, I was knowing him well denmez. Türkçede “onu iyi tanıyordum” dediğimiz için bu fark özellikle dikkat ister.
