Derinlemesine İncele

Kural

  1. Geçmiş hakkında çıkarım

Modals of past deduction, bugün görülen ipuçlarından yola çıkarak geçmişte olmuş bir şey hakkında mantıklı bir sonuç çıkarmayı sağlar. Türkçede “Yerler ıslak, gece yağmur yağmış olmalı” derken yaptığımız şey budur. Yapı: modal + have + fiilin üçüncü hâli. Kesinlik derecesine göre üç seçenek vardır.

  2. Must have

    (1) Must have + üçüncü hâl: neredeyse kesin olumlu çıkarım. The pavement is soaking wet; it must have rained in the night. David got the promotion; he must have worked very hard.

  3. Can't have, couldn't have

    (2) Can't have ya da couldn't have + üçüncü hâl: neredeyse kesin olumsuz çıkarım, yani geçmişte olmasının imkânsız olduğu. He can't have taken the laptop; he was on holiday all week. You couldn't have seen Sarah in town yesterday; she's in Tokyo.

  4. Might have, may have, could have

    (3) Might have, may have ya da could have + üçüncü hâl: geçmişte olmuş olabileceği düşünülen ama kanıtlanamayan ihtimal. Emma didn't answer her phone; she might have been asleep. They could have taken a wrong turn.

  5. Kısaltma ve of hatası

Konuşmada have genellikle 've olarak kısaltılır ve zayıf okunur: must've, might've, can't've. Bu yüzden yazıda sık sık yanlışlıkla of yazılır.

İstisnalar

Geçmişte bir şeyin imkânsız olduğunu söylerken must not have değil, can't have ya da couldn't have kullanılır: He can't have said that. Amerikan İngilizcesinde must not have zayıf bir olumsuz tahmin olarak duyulabilir (She must not have seen me, beni görmemiş olmalı), ama imkânsızlık bildirmez. Could have bir başka anlamda, yapılabilecekken yapılmamış bir şeyi de anlatır: I could have won the race, but I fell.
