Inversion

Kural

  1. Soru sırası, soru değil

    Inversion (devrik yapı), yardımcı fiilin öznenin önüne geçmesidir. Cümle soru sırasını alır ama soru değildir; soru işareti de almaz. Bu yapı çoğunlukla olumsuz ya da kısıtlayıcı bir zarf cümlenin başına alındığında ortaya çıkar ve bir şeyin ne kadar nadir, beklenmedik ya da önemli olduğunu vurgular. Türkçede vurguyu kelime sırasıyla ve tonlamayla yaparız (“Hayatımda hiç böyle bir şey görmedim”); İngilizcede ise bu vurgu yardımcı fiilin öne geçmesiyle kurulur: Never have I seen anything like this.

  2. Tetikleyen ifadeler

    Devrik yapıyı tetikleyen en yaygın ifadeler şunlardır: never (before), rarely, seldom, little, hardly … when, scarcely … when ve no sooner … than. Rarely do we see such talent. Hardly had we sat down when the phone rang. No sooner had I arrived than it started to rain.

  3. Do, does, did eklemek

    Cümlede yardımcı fiil yoksa, soru kurarken olduğu gibi do, does ya da did eklenir ve ana fiil yalın kalır: Little did they know what was waiting for them.

  4. Not until ve only after

    Not until, only after, only when ve not since ile başlayan cümlelerde ise yalnızca ana cümle devrik olur; girişteki zaman cümleciği normal sırasını korur: Not until the lights went out did the audience fall silent. Only after I had read the report did I understand the problem.

At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.

1. Decide what is foregrounded

Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.

What matters is the evidence.

2. Check register

Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.

Not only did she win, but she broke the record.

3. Watch compressed clauses

Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.

Having finished, we left.

Use this path when a sentence feels grammatical but awkward.

  3. 3Put manner before place before time when several adverbials come at the end.
  4. 4Move time to the front only when it helps the sentence flow.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.
