Indirect and reported questions

Indirect question (dolaylı soru), daha uzun bir cümlenin içinde yer alır ve bunu yapar yapmaz soru gibi davranmayı bırakır. Burada düz cümle sıralamasına dönüşü, do/does/did'in kaybolmasını ve if/whether'ı çalışırsın.

Kural

  1. Kibar soru

    Indirect question (dolaylı soru), bir soruyu kibar bir giriş cümlesinin içine yerleştirerek sormaktır. Tanımadığın biriyle, bir müşteriyle ya da resmi bir yerde konuşurken doğrudan “Where is the bank?” demek sert kaçabilir; bunun yerine Could you tell me where the bank is? denir. Türkçede “Bankanın nerede olduğunu söyler misiniz?” diye soruyu bir isim cümlesine çevirmemize benzer.

  2. İçteki soru düz sırada

    Temel kural şudur: içteki soru, soru olmaktan çıkar ve normal cümle sırasına döner, yani önce özne, sonra fiil gelir; do, does ve did tamamen düşer. Soru kelimeli sorularda: What time does the train leave? → Do you know what time the train leaves? Does düştüğü için üçüncü tekil -s ana fiile geri döner.

  3. Evet-hayır soruları

    Evet-hayır sorularında soru kelimesi olmadığı için if ya da whether eklenir: Is the library open on Sundays? → Could you tell me if the library is open on Sundays?

  4. Giriş kalıpları

    Sık kullanılan giriş kalıpları şunlardır: Could you tell me …, Do you know …, Do you have any idea …, Would you mind telling me …, Can you let me know …, I wonder if …, I was wondering if …. Yalnızca dıştaki giriş kısmı soru sırasındadır; içteki kısım hep düz cümle sırasındadır.

At B1, grammar links ideas: condition, result, reported meaning, experience, and narrative order.

1. Name the relationship

Ask whether the sentence gives a condition, contrast, cause, report, or result.

If it rains, we will stay home.

2. Separate time from aspect

Finished event, visible result, duration, and background action use different forms.

I had left before she arrived.

3. Test both clauses

In complex sentences, the second half often proves the first half.

I wish I knew.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

İstisnalar

Noktalama giriş kısmına göre değişir. Giriş bir soruysa (Could you tell me …, Do you know …) cümle soru işaretiyle biter. Giriş bir önermeyse (I wonder …, I'd like to know …, I'm not sure …) cümle nokta ile biter: I wonder where she lives. Soru kelimesi öznenin kendisi olduğunda sıra zaten değişmez: Who called? → Do you know who called?
