Discourse markers

Discourse markers, cümleler ve paragraflar arasındaki ilişkiyi gösteren bağlayıcılardır: however, although, despite, therefore, on the other hand gibi.     Discourse marker'lar (söylem belirleyicileri), cümleler, paragraflar ya da konuşmadaki sıralar arasındaki mantıksal ilişkiyi gösterir: karşıtlık, taviz, sebep, ekleme ya da tutum. Doğru kullanmak için iki şeyi bilmek gerekir: anlamı ve arkasından gelen yapı.

    (1) Taviz bildirenler. Although, even though ve though bağlaçtır ve arkalarından özne ve fiil içeren bir cümle gelir: Although the weather got worse, the team reached the summit. Despite ve in spite of ise edattır; arkalarından isim, zamir ya da -ing gelir: Despite careful research, the product failed; In spite of feeling ill, she went to work. Despite'tan sonra tam bir cümle kullanmak istenirse the fact that eklenir: Despite the fact that sales fell, the company paid a dividend. Türkçedeki “-masına rağmen” eki her iki yapıya da karşılık geldiği için bu ayrım Türkçe konuşanlar için özellikle önemlidir.

  3. Cümleler arası bağlayıcılar

However, nevertheless, nonetheless, therefore, furthermore ve moreover iki ayrı cümleyi bağlar; genellikle yeni cümlenin başında gelir ve arkasından virgül alır, ya da iki cümle noktalı virgülle birleştirilir: The plan was expensive; however, it worked. Bu kelimeler iki cümleyi yalnızca virgülle birleştiremez.

  4. On the other hand, on the contrary

    (3) On the other hand ile on the contrary. On the other hand iki geçerli bakış açısını karşılaştırır: The flat is small. On the other hand, it's very central. On the contrary ise önceki bir iddiayı reddeder ve tersini söyler: The task wasn't easy; on the contrary, it took months.

At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.

1. Decide what is foregrounded

Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.

What matters is the evidence.

Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.

3. Watch compressed clauses

Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

İstisnalar

Even though gerçek bir durumu kabul ederek taviz verir: Even though it rained, we enjoyed ourselves, yağmur gerçekten yağdı. Even if ise varsayımsal bir koşuldur ve sonucun değişmeyeceğini söyler: Even if it rains tomorrow, the match will go ahead, yağıp yağmayacağı belli değil. Türkçede ikisi de “-sa bile” ya da “-masına rağmen” diye çevrilebildiği için gerçek mi varsayım mı olduğuna bakarak seçmek gerekir.
