Hızlı Öğren
First ve second conditional ikisi de gelecekten söz eder. Fark, konuşanın onu ne kadar olası bulduğudur.
Aklında tut
- First: if + present, sonra will. Gerçek ve olası.
- Second: if + past, sonra would. Olası değil, hayalî ya da varsayımsal.
- Second conditional'daki past biçimi geçmiş zaman değildir; gerçeklikten uzaklığı gösterir.
Örnekler
- 1If the train arrives on time tomorrow, we will reach the hotel before sunset.
- 2If I were you, I would speak directly to the manager about your concerns.
Kaçınılması Gereken Yaygın Tuzak
First conditional'da if'ten sonra will gelmez. Anlam gelecek olsa bile if'li cümle present kalır.

Kural
Farkı bakış belirler
First ve second conditional ikisi de şimdiden ya da gelecekten söz edebilir; aralarındaki fark, konuşanın durumu ne kadar gerçekçi bulduğudur. Türkçede “Zamanım olursa gelirim” ile “Zamanım olsa gelirdim” arasındaki fark tam olarak budur.
First conditional
(1) First conditional gerçekten olabilecek bir durumu anlatır. Yapı: If + present simple, will, can ya da might + yalın fiil. If the weather is sunny tomorrow, we will cycle to the beach. If you study hard, you will pass the exam. Konuşan, olayın olmasını mümkün görür.
Second conditional
(2) Second conditional hayali, gerçeğe aykırı ya da olması pek beklenmeyen bir durumu anlatır. Yapı: If + past simple, would, could ya da might + yalın fiil. If I had more free time, I would learn the cello. If I won the lottery, I would buy a house by the sea. Buradaki past simple geçmiş zamanı değil, gerçeklikten uzaklığı gösterir.
Aynı konu, iki bakış
Aynı konu iki biçimde de söylenebilir ve farkı konuşanın bakışı belirler: If I get the job, I will move to Ankara (işi alma ihtimalim yüksek) ile If I got the job, I would move to Ankara (pek sanmıyorum).
If I were
Second conditional'da be fiili resmi ve standart İngilizcede bütün öznelerle were olur: If she were here, she would know what to do. If I were you kalıbı öğüt vermenin en yaygın yoludur.

How to read this B1 topic
At B1, grammar links ideas: condition, result, reported meaning, experience, and narrative order.
1. Name the relationship
Ask whether the sentence gives a condition, contrast, cause, report, or result.
If it rains, we will stay home.
2. Separate time from aspect
Finished event, visible result, duration, and background action use different forms.
I had left before she arrived.
3. Test both clauses
In complex sentences, the second half often proves the first half.
I wish I knew.
Conditional patterns
Read both halves. The result clause often tells you which condition pattern is needed.
| Meaning | If-clause | Result clause | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| general truth | present simple | present simple | If water freezes, it expands. |
| real future | present simple | will + base verb | If it rains, we will stay. |
| imaginary present | past simple | would + base verb | If I knew, I would tell you. |
| imaginary past | past perfect | would have + participle | If I had known, I would have called. |
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.
Örnekler
- 1If the train arrives on time tomorrow, we will reach the hotel before sunset.

- 4She will definitely pass her driving test next week if she stays calm.
- 5What would you do if you found an expensive leather wallet on the sidewalk?
- 6If the temperature drops below zero tonight, the highway will become icy.

İstisnalar
Unless “if not” anlamına gelir ve olumsuzluğu kendi içinde taşıdığı için arkasından olumlu fiil gelir: Unless you leave now, you will be late. Sonuç kısmında will ve would yerine başka modal fiiller de kullanılabilir: might ve may olasılık (If it rains, we might stay home), could ise yetenek ya da imkân bildirir (If I had a car, I could drive us). Günlük konuşmada If I was you da duyulur, ama sınavlarda ve yazıda If I were you beklenir.
