Participial adverbials (ortaçlı zarf cümlecikleri), zaman, sebep, koşul ya da taviz bildiren çekimli bir yan cümlenin yerine geçen participle öbekleridir. Türkçedeki “-ınca”, “-dığı için”, “-ıp” ve “-mış olarak” eklerinin yaptığı işi görürler.
Üç biçim
Participle'ın biçimi hem çatıyı hem de zaman ilişkisini gösterir.
(1) Present participle (-ing): etken çatı; ana eylemle aynı anda ya da hemen öncesinde: Hearing the news, she called her mother.
(2) Past participle (-ed ya da düzensiz üçüncü hâl): edilgen çatı; özne eylemden etkilenir: Built in 1890, the station is now a museum.
(3) Perfect participle (having done ya da having been done): eylem ana eylemden önce bitmiştir: Having lived in Tokyo for ten years, he speaks Japanese fluently; Having been rejected twice, she tried a different publisher.
Bağlaç ve mutlak yapı
İlişki belirsiz kalabilecekse bir bağlaç eklenir: while, when, once, although, unless, if: Although warned about the risks, they went ahead; Unless stated otherwise, prices include tax.
