Nasıl yapıldığı
Tarz zarfları (adverbs of manner) bir işin nasıl yapıldığını anlatır ve how? sorusuna cevap verir. Çoğu, sıfata -ly eklenerek yapılır: quick → quickly, quiet → quietly, careful → carefully, clear → clearly. Türkçede “dikkatli” kelimesi hem sıfat hem zarf olabilir (dikkatli bir sürücü, dikkatli sürer); İngilizcede ise sıfat ile zarf çoğu zaman ayrı biçimdedir: a careful driver, she drives carefully.
Yazım değişiklikleri
Yazım değişiklikleri:
(1) ünsüz + y ile biten sıfatlarda y, -ily olur: happy → happily, easy → easily.
(2) -le ile biten sıfatlarda e düşer ve y gelir: gentle → gently, simple → simply.
(3) -ic ile biten sıfatlar -ally alır: automatic → automatically.
Düzensiz zarflar ve yeri
En sık kullanılan bazı zarflar ise düzensizdir ve -ly almaz: good → well (She is a good driver, She drives well), fast → fast, hard → hard, late → late, early → early. Tarz zarfı genellikle fiilden ya da nesneden sonra gelir, ama fiil ile nesnenin arasına girmez: She speaks English fluently denir.

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

İstisnalar
Friendly, lovely, lively, lonely ve silly -ly ile bitse de sıfattır, zarf değildir. Zarf anlamı vermek için in a ... way kalıbı kullanılır: She greeted us in a friendly way. Hard ile hardly da farklı kelimelerdir: hard “çok çalışarak, sıkı” demektir (He works hard), hardly ise “neredeyse hiç” (He hardly works).
