Discourse-level aspect at C2 governs how narrative and analytical timelines are maintained, suspended, and refocused across entire texts. While sentence-level aspect indicates whether an individual action is completed or ongoing, macro-discourse aspect establishes temporal depth, viewpoint shifts, and thematic foregrounding versus backgrounding. The past perfect simple and continuous establish a secondary retrospective baseline, allowing the writer to explore antecedent causes before returning smoothly to the narrative foreground in the past simple: The administration had been contemplating fiscal reforms for months. Several working groups had submitted reports. In October, the prime minister acted. Future-in-the-past constructions (was to become, was to have achieved) introduce dramatic historical irony by revealing long-term outcomes unbeknownst to contemporary actors.
