Aspect In Extended Discourse
Aprendizaje rápido
At C2, aspect functions across macro-discourse, weaving complex retrospective, prospective, and habitual perspectives across paragraphs.
Recuerda
- Orchestrate past perfect simple and continuous across multi-sentence paragraphs to anchor retrospective flashbacks.
- Deploy future-in-the-past constructions like was to have done to manage narrative irony, historic retrospection, and fate.
- Utilize progressive aspect in stative contexts to register deliberate theatricality, tentative posture, or emergent trends.
Ejemplos
- 1The research consortium had been examining coastal erosion patterns for nearly a decade before publishing its benchmark findings.
- 2Little did the young physicist realize that this obscure laboratory calculation was to revolutionize theoretical quantum mechanics.
Error común que evitar
Losing aspectual control across paragraph transitions by perpetually shifting between past and present without structural rationale.

Aspect across a text
Discourse-level aspect at C2 governs how narrative and analytical timelines are maintained, suspended, and refocused across entire texts. While sentence-level aspect indicates whether an individual action is completed or ongoing, macro-discourse aspect establishes temporal depth, viewpoint shifts, and thematic foregrounding versus backgrounding.
A retrospective baseline
The past perfect simple and continuous establish a secondary retrospective baseline, allowing the writer to explore antecedent causes before returning smoothly to the narrative foreground in the past simple: The administration had been contemplating fiscal reforms for months. Several working groups had submitted reports. In October, the prime minister acted.
Future in the past
Future-in-the-past constructions (was to become, was to have achieved) introduce dramatic historical irony by revealing long-term outcomes unbeknownst to contemporary actors.
In academic writing
In academic discourse, the present perfect introduces topics as having ongoing relevance (Scholars have long debated), while shifting to the past simple zeroes in on a specific author's empirical execution (In 2018, Davies investigated).

How to read this C2 topic
At C2, grammar manages nuance: responsibility, irony, concession, distance, rhythm, and dense argument.
1. Read the writer's stance
Advanced forms may signal caution, skepticism, authority, or deliberate distance.
The proposal would appear to be flawed.
2. Recover what is omitted
Ellipsis and compression expect the reader to rebuild missing grammar.
If necessary, revise the clause.
3. Match form to discourse
The most sophisticated option is the one that fits purpose and register.
Little did they realize what followed.
Decision path before answering
Use these checks before choosing between close options.
- 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
- 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
- 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
- 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Excepciones
When a historical narrative is recounted in the dramatic historical present, aspectual rules remain strictly operative: progressive forms still indicate ongoing concurrent background action while simple forms drive chronological progression.
Errores frecuentes
Aspectual oscillation
Switching between past perfect and past simple in the same scene without a reason blurs the timeline.
