Inversion
Peraturan
Inversion reverses standard subject-auxiliary order for dramatic emphasis, formality, or suspense following negative or limiting adverbial openers.
Syntactic inversion involves shifting an auxiliary verb or modal before the grammatical subject, mirroring question order while retaining declarative punctuation and meaning. In English, this occurs primarily when negative, restrictive, or conditional words are fronted to emphasize rarity, restriction, or unexpected timing. Common negative and limiting triggers include: Never before, Rarely, Seldom, Little, Hardly... when, Scarcely... when, and No sooner... than. When a sentence lacks an auxiliary or modal verb, dummy do, does, or did must be introduced (Little did they know what awaited them). With complex time conjunctions like Not until, Only after, Only when, and Not since, the inversion occurs exclusively in the main independent clause, while the introductory adverbial clause retains standard subject-verb order: Not until the lights went out did the audience fall silent (the first clause is un-inverted; the main clause is inverted).
Ingat
- Trigger subject-auxiliary inversion after negative adverbs including never, rarely, seldom, barely, hardly, scarcely, and no sooner.
- Notice that expressions like not until, not only, and only after invert the main clause rather than the subordinate adverbial clause.
- Supply the dummy auxiliary do, does, or did in the correct tense when the affirmative sentence lacks an existing auxiliary verb.
Perangkap Biasa yang Perlu Dielakkan
Inverting the subordinate time clause rather than the main clause after not until or only after, as in Not until had he called did she leave.

How to read this B2 topic
At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.
1. Decide what is foregrounded
Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.
What matters is the evidence.
2. Check register
Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.
Not only did she win, but she broke the record.
3. Watch compressed clauses
Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.
Having finished, we left.
English word-order check
Use this path when a sentence feels grammatical but awkward.
- 1Find the subject and the finite verb.
- 2Keep the verb close to its direct object.
- 3Put manner before place before time when several adverbials come at the end.
- 4Move time to the front only when it helps the sentence flow.
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Pengecualian
Inversion does not occur after only when it modifies the grammatical subject directly: Only authorized personnel may enter this room features standard declarative word order because only qualifies the subject itself, not an adverbial element.
Kesilapan biasa
Double inversion in both clauses (Not until did we arrive did the show start), using when instead of than with no sooner (No sooner had I opened the door when it rang - correct is than it rang), or forgetting that the main verb must remain in the bare infinitive after dummy did (Seldom did she visited instead of Seldom did she visit).
