Adverbs of manner and degree

La regola

Adverbs of manner describe how an action happens, most formed by adding -ly to adjectives, and never split verbs from objects.

Adverbs of manner describe the way or style in which an action is performed, answering the question "How?". Formation from Adjectives: Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix -ly to the adjective: quick → quickly, quiet → quietly, careful → carefully, patient → patiently, clear → clearly. Spelling Modifications: (1) Adjectives ending in consonant + y change -y to -ily: happy → happily, easy → easily, heavy → heavily. (2) Adjectives ending in -le replace -e with -y: gentle → gently, simple → simply, comfortable → comfortably. (3) Adjectives ending in -ic add -ally: automatic → automatically, tragic → tragically. Irregular Adverbs: Some of the most common adverbs do not end in -ly: good → well ("She is a good driver" / "She drives well"); fast → fast ("He runs fast"); hard → hard ("He works hard"); late → late ("The train arrived late"); early → early ("She woke up early"). Placement Constraints: Adverbs of manner typically follow the main verb or follow the direct object. They must NEVER split a transitive verb from its direct object: say "She speaks English fluently", never "She speaks fluently English".

Ricorda

  • Regular adverbs add -ly: quick becomes quickly, careful becomes carefully, quiet becomes quietly.
  • Irregular adverbs keep their own form: fast stays fast, hard stays hard, good becomes well.
  • Adverbs follow verbs or direct objects: she drives carefully, she speaks English fluently.

Trappola comune da evitare

Never place an adverb between a verb and its direct object: say she plays the piano beautifully, not she plays beautifully the piano.

How to read this A2 topic

At A2, the challenge is choosing between similar time frames, pronouns, and quantity patterns.

1. Look for the time clue

Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.

I watched it yesterday.

2. Choose the pattern first

Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

I am going to study.

3. Check word position

Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

I know him well.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Eccezioni

Adjectives Ending in -ly: A small group of common words ending in -ly are adjectives, NOT adverbs: friendly, lovely, lively, lonely, silly, ugly. To use them adverbially, English uses a periphrastic prepositional phrase: say "She greeted us in a friendly way", never "She greeted us friendlily". Hard vs. Hardly: Hard means with great effort ("He works hard"); hardly means almost not at all ("He hardly works").

Errori frequenti

(1) Splitting verb and direct object: "He plays very well the piano." → "He plays the piano very well." (Direct objects must remain adjacent to verbs). (2) Using good instead of the adverb well: "She sings very good." → "She sings very well." (Good is an adjective; well is the adverb of manner). (3) Adding -ly to irregular fast: "He drives fastly." → "He drives fast." (Fast is both adjective and adverb).

Mettiti alla prova
