Émile Zola publie Germinal en 1885, au sein des Rougon-Macquart, son cycle de vingt romans sur une famille sous le Second Empire. Étienne Lantier, mécanicien sans travail, arrive par une nuit glaciale de mars à la fosse du Voreux, près de Montsou, dans le Nord. Il trouve à s'embaucher au fond aux côtés de la famille Maheu et découvre comment vivent les mineurs avec des salaires qui suffisent à peine à manger. Quand la Compagnie rogne la paie, Étienne commence à parler de grève.
