Subject-auxiliary inversion (where an auxiliary or modal verb precedes the subject) occurs after: (1) Negative and restrictive adverbs fronted for emphasis: Scarcely had the expedition departed when blizzards struck; Under no circumstances may unauthorized personnel view these classified dossiers; (2) Correlative conjunctions: Not only did the policy curb inflation, but it also stimulated foreign investment; (3) Two-clause conditional/temporal openers: in constructions with Not until, Only after, Only when, and Not since, the introductory clause retains regular affirmative order, while inversion is triggered exclusively in the main matrix clause: Not until the archival records were declassified did the full scale of the operation become known. In contrast, full inversion (lexical verb precedes subject without dummy do) occurs when prepositional or participial phrases of location or direction are fronted: Above the city gates hung the ancient coat of arms.
