C2 ellipsis and substitution go beyond basic conversational omissions to encompass sophisticated discourse economies in legal, academic, and literary English. In predicate ellipsis, an auxiliary stands for a complete verb phrase, but must preserve precise voice, tense, and aspectual compatibility with its antecedent: While the initial hypothesis had predicted a linear response, subsequent trials had not [predicted a linear response]. In comparative ellipsis, the stranded auxiliary must match the omitted predicate: The experimental group reacted far more rapidly than the control cohort did. For substitution, proficient writers distinguish between do so (referring to a previously specified deliberate action in general: She resolved to resign and did so that afternoon), do that (introducing contrast or emphasis: You must never do that), and do it (referring to a concrete, discrete physical accomplishment). In nominal ellipsis, the head noun is omitted after determiners, numerals, or superlative adjectives: Of the three proposed amendments, the committee adopted the most radical.
