Cleft & Pseudo-Cleft Focus
规则
Cleft focus at C2 partitions clauses to command contrastive emphasis, disambiguate thematic roles, and create theatrical emphasis.
Cleft sentences are marked syntactic configurations that cleave (split) a single proposition into two distinct structural clauses, thereby providing an unmistakable spotlight for a specific element of information. In an It-cleft, the pattern consists of: It + be + focused element + relative clause introduced by that, who, or which. This structure can isolate and emphasize virtually any constituent: the grammatical subject (It was the lead architect who conceived the dome), the object (It was the second proposal that the committee adopted), or an entire adverbial phrase (It was only after years of litigation that the patents were released). In Wh-clefts (pseudo-clefts), a nominal relative clause introduced by what constitutes the subject or complement: What the administration must avoid is complacency. Reversed wh-clefts invert this pattern, placing the focal element in thematic position for dramatic impact: Complacency is what the administration must avoid. Specialized variations include All-clefts (All they asked for was a fair trial).
记住
- Master it-clefts across varied constituents: subjects, direct objects, prepositional phrases, and subordinate adverbial clauses.
- Deploy pseudo-clefts and reversed wh-clefts to spotlight verbal predicates, communicative aims, and abstract concepts.
- Construct thematic phrase clefts with the thing that, the reason why, the person who, and all that to calibrate communicative focus.
需要避开的常见陷阱
Using what instead of that or who in an it-cleft, or using cleft constructions when no contrastive focus is intended.

How to read this C2 topic
At C2, grammar manages nuance: responsibility, irony, concession, distance, rhythm, and dense argument.
1. Read the writer's stance
Advanced forms may signal caution, skepticism, authority, or deliberate distance.
The proposal would appear to be flawed.
2. Recover what is omitted
Ellipsis and compression expect the reader to rebuild missing grammar.
If necessary, revise the clause.
3. Match form to discourse
The most sophisticated option is the one that fits purpose and register.
Little did they realize what followed.
English word-order check
Use this path when a sentence feels grammatical but awkward.
- 1Find the subject and the finite verb.
- 2Keep the verb close to its direct object.
- 3Put manner before place before time when several adverbials come at the end.
- 4Move time to the front only when it helps the sentence flow.
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

例外
In formal it-clefts where the focused constituent is a personal pronoun, subjective case is maintained, and the relative clause agrees with that pronoun: It is I who have been wronged, It was they who were appointed. In informal English, objective pronouns with third-person singular agreement dominate: It was them that did it.
常见错误
Employing what as a relative marker inside an it-cleft: It was his courage what saved the mission (ungrammatical; standard English mandates that saved the mission).
