  1. Duruma göre üslup

    Register (üslup düzeyi), aynı içeriği duruma ve okura göre farklı biçimsellikte söyleme becerisidir. Bir arkadaşa yazılan mesajla bir şirkete yazılan resmi başvuru aynı dilde, ama farklı üsluplarda yazılır. Türkçede “sen” ve “siz” ayrımı ile “-ebilir misiniz” gibi kibarlık ekleri bu işi görür; İngilizcede ise üslup daha çok sözcük seçimi ve cümle yapısıyla kurulur.

  2. Sözcük seçimi

    Resmi üslubun dört boyutu vardır.

    (1) Sözcük seçimi: phrasal verb yerine tek sözcüklük, genellikle Latince kökenli fiil. Look into yerine investigate, put off yerine postpone, find out yerine discover, get rid of yerine eliminate.

  3. Kişisiz yapı ve konuşma işaretleri

    (2) Kişisiz yapı: I think ya da we found yerine edilgen ya da kişisiz kalıplar: It was found that, The data indicate.

    (3) Konuşma işaretlerini çıkarmak: kısaltmalar (don't, can't), dolgu sözcükleri (well, you know), belirsiz sözcükler (stuff, a lot of, kind of) ve retorik sorular resmi metinde yer almaz.

  4. Diplomatik yumuşatma

    (4) Diplomatik yumuşatma: istek ve eleştiriler doğrudan emir yerine modal fiillerle ve kibar kalıplarla yapılır: We would be grateful if you could …; It may be worth reconsidering …. Günlük üslup ise tersini yapar: kısa cümleler, phrasal verb'ler ve doğrudan hitap.

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.
