    Subjunctive (dilek kipi), gerçek olmayan, istenen ya da zorunlu tutulan durumları anlatır. İngilizcede ayrı bir çekimi yoktur; fiilin yalın hâli ya da were ile kurulur, bu yüzden fark edilmesi zordur. Üç kullanımı vardır.

  2. Mandative subjunctive

    (1) Emir ve zorunluluk bildiren subjunctive (mandative). Insist, demand, recommend, suggest, request gibi fiillerden ve essential, vital, imperative, crucial gibi sıfatlardan sonra gelen that-cümleciğinde fiil yalın hâlde kalır; öznenin üçüncü tekil olması ya da cümlenin geçmiş zamanda olması bunu değiştirmez: The doctor recommended that he rest for a week; It is essential that every guest be registered. Türkçedeki “-mesi” yapısı (“dinlenmesini önerdi”) bu yapıyı karşılar. BrE'de should ile kurulan biçim de yaygındır: that he should rest.

  3. Were subjunctive

    (2) Were subjunctive. Gerçek dışı koşullarda ve dileklerde tüm kişilerle were kullanılır: If I were you; I wish she were here. Resmi yazıda devrik biçim de kullanılır: Were it not for the rain.

  4. Geçmiş biçimle gerçek dışılık

    (3) Geçmiş biçimle gerçek dışılık. It's (high) time, would rather ve as if ya da as though'dan sonra geçmiş zaman biçimi şimdiki ya da gelecekteki bir durumu anlatır: It's time we left; I'd rather you didn't smoke here; He talks as if he knew everything.
