Ellipsis and substitution

Is it going to rain? I think so. Bu kısa cevapta so, bütün bir cümlenin yerini tutar. Bu sayfada so ve not ile yerine koymayı, yardımcı fiille eksiltmeyi ve one ile that of kullanımını çalışır, ardından oyunda pratik yaparsın.

Hızlı Öğren

Eksiltme ve yerine koyma, bağlamdan anlaşılan parçaları atarak ya da kısa bir sözcükle değiştirerek tekrarı önler.

Aklında tut

  • Think, believe ve suppose ile olumsuzluk ana fiile geçer: I don't think so.
  • Hope ve be afraid ile not kullanılır: I hope not; I'm afraid not.
  • Yardımcı fiil bütün yüklemi temsil eder: She said she'd come, and she did.

Örnekler

  1. 1Will the central bank increase interest rates at the upcoming meeting? Analysts certainly believe so.
  2. 2Do the audit figures indicate systematic misappropriation? The lead investigator certainly hopes not.

Kaçınılması Gereken Yaygın Tuzak

Hope ile olumsuzluğu ana fiile taşıma: I don't hope so yanlış, I hope not doğru.

Derinlemesine İncele

Kural

  1. Atmak ve yerine koymak

Ellipsis (eksiltme), bağlamdan anlaşılabilen sözcüklerin atılmasıdır; substitution (yerine koyma) ise tekrar edilecek bir öğenin yerine kısa bir sözcük kullanmaktır. Türkçede de eksiltme yaparız (“Ben çay içtim, o da kahve”), ama İngilizcede atılan yerin nasıl doldurulacağı daha sıkı kurallara bağlıdır.

  2. So ve not

    (1) So ve not ile cümlecik yerine koyma. Think, believe, suppose, expect, hope, be afraid gibi fiillerden sonra bütün bir that-cümleciğinin yerine so gelir: Is the shop open today? I think so. Olumsuz cevapta iki kalıp vardır. Think, believe, suppose ve expect ile olumsuzluk ana fiile geçer: I don't think so. Hope ve be afraid ile olumsuzluk not ile kurulur: I hope not; I'm afraid not.

  3. Yardımcı fiille eksiltme

    (2) Yardımcı fiille eksiltme. Bütün bir yüklem, onu temsil eden yardımcı fiile indirgenir: She said she would help, and she did. He can't swim, but his brother can. Yardımcı fiilin zamanı ve görünüşü, atılan yüklemle uyumlu olmalıdır.

  4. İsim yerine koyma

    (3) İsim yerine koyma. Sayılabilir bir ismin tekrarını önlemek için one ve ones kullanılır: I don't like the red shirt; I prefer the blue one. Resmi karşılaştırmada that of ve those of kullanılır: The population of Istanbul is larger than that of Ankara.

Görsel rehber

How to read this C1 topic

At C1, think like an editor: precision, cohesion, stance, information flow, and controlled formality.

1. Track reference

Pronouns, substitution, and ellipsis must point to something recoverable.

I liked the first plan, but not the second.

2. Identify stance

Hedging and modality show how strongly the writer commits.

This may suggest a wider trend.

3. Shape the focus

Clefts, inversion, and nominalization decide what the reader notices first.

It was the timing that surprised us.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.
