British and American grammar
Kural
C1 British and American grammar analysis navigates systematic differences in collective agreement, tense aspect, modality, and prepositions.
While British English (BrE) and American English (AmE) share fundamental grammatical foundations, systematic syntactic, morphological, and prepositional variations distinguish them at C1. Key structural divergence areas include: (1) Collective noun agreement: in BrE, collective nouns like committee, government, team, and family can take either singular or plural verbs depending on whether the entity is viewed as a unified body or individual members (The committee have decided; The team are celebrating). In AmE, collective nouns almost invariably demand singular agreement (The committee has decided; The team is celebrating); (2) Perfect aspect versus past simple: BrE strictly requires the present perfect with adverbs of recent time such as just, already, and yet (I have just finished; Have you eaten yet?), whereas AmE frequently accepts the past simple (I just finished; Did you eat yet?); (3) Verb morphology: AmE retains the archaic past participle gotten (have gotten), while BrE uses got (have got, except in forgotten). Irregular past forms ending in -t (learnt, burnt, dreamt) are standard in BrE, while AmE favors regularized -ed forms (learned, burned, dreamed); (4) Prepositional distinctions: BrE prefers at the weekend, in a street, and cater for, whereas AmE prefers on the weekend, on a street, and cater to.

Decision path before answering
Use these checks before choosing between close options.

- 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
- 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
