Past perfect
Правило
The past perfect establishes an earlier past action completed before another past event in historical narratives.
The Past Perfect Simple is used to clarify that an action was completed prior to another past action or past time anchor. In literary and conversational narrative discourse, it functions as the "past of the past". When a speaker is already recounting events in the Past Simple, the Past Perfect allows them to step back earlier in time to describe what had already transpired. Formula: Subject + had ('d) + past participle (had is identical for all subjects: I had, you had, she had, they had). Negative: had not (hadn't) + past participle. Questions: Had + Subject + past participle? Examples: "When we arrived at the cinema at eight o'clock, the movie had already started" (Sequence: 1st, movie started; 2nd, we arrived); "David couldn't enter his flat because he had forgotten his keys at the office". Common Temporal Connectors: (1) By the time + Past Simple clause: "By the time the ambulance arrived, the neighbours had already assisted the driver". (2) Before / After: Clarifies preceding events. (3) Already and Just: Emphasize completion prior to the past moment ("The train had just departed when I reached the platform"). (4) When-clauses: Connect the past anchor to the earlier event.
Запомни
- Form it with had and the past participle: the train had already departed when we reached the station.
- It serves as the past of the past, clarifying chronological order in storytelling.
- Connectors like by the time, before, after, and already frequently introduce the past perfect.
Частая ошибка, которой стоит избегать
Do not overuse the past perfect when the chronological order is already clear from time words: after we ate, we left.

How to read this B1 topic
At B1, grammar links ideas: condition, result, reported meaning, experience, and narrative order.
1. Name the relationship
Ask whether the sentence gives a condition, contrast, cause, report, or result.
If it rains, we will stay home.
2. Separate time from aspect
Finished event, visible result, duration, and background action use different forms.
I had left before she arrived.
3. Test both clauses
In complex sentences, the second half often proves the first half.
I wish I knew.
Perfect aspect
Perfect forms connect one time to another: earlier to now, earlier to a past point, or duration up to a point.
| Form | Pattern | Core use | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| present perfect | have / has + past participle | past result or experience now | I have finished. |
| present perfect continuous | have / has been + -ing | duration up to now | She has been studying. |
| past perfect | had + past participle | earlier than another past event | They had left before noon. |
| past perfect continuous | had been + -ing | duration before a past point | I had been waiting. |
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Исключения
Unnecessary Past Perfect with Clear Sequential Connectors: When the chronological order of two past events is already unmistakably clear from conjunctions like before or after, the Past Simple is often preferred for simplicity: say "After we ate dinner, we went for a walk", though "After we had eaten dinner..." is also grammatically correct. Past Perfect for Unfulfilled Desires: The Past Perfect with verbs like hope, wish, plan, and intend describes past hopes that did not materialize: "I had hoped to visit you, but I fell ill."
Частые ошибки
(1) Overusing past perfect for all past actions: "Yesterday I had gone to the store and then I had bought milk." → "Yesterday I went to the store and then I bought milk." (Use past simple for sequential narrative). (2) Confusing past perfect with present perfect: "She had lived here since 2020." (when she still lives here today) → "She has lived here since 2020." (Ongoing states take present perfect). (3) Reversing the clauses: "When the train had arrived, we bought tickets."
