Modal perfect
Aturan
Modal perfects combine modal auxiliaries with have and a past participle to formulate retrospective deductions, missed possibilities, and moral critiques.
Modal perfects (modal auxiliary + have + past participle) allow speakers to evaluate past events from the perspective of knowledge, probability, regret, or desirability. Logical deductions about the past are divided sharply into affirmative and negative certainty: must have + past participle denotes positive logical certainty (The streets are soaking wet; it must have rained heavily last night), whereas can't have or couldn't have + past participle denotes negative logical certainty (She couldn't have committed the theft because she was on television at the time). Speculations of weaker certainty rely on might have, may have, or could have (He may have missed his connection). For counterfactual advice, missed obligations, and moral reprimands, English uses should have or ought to have (You should have consulted your supervisor before signing). Finally, would have marks counterfactual past results in conditionals or polite willingness.
Ingat
- Use must have done for high-certainty logical deductions and can't have or couldn't have for certainty of impossibility in the past.
- Use should have done or ought to have done to critique past behavior or express unfulfilled obligations.
- Distinguish needn't have done where the action occurred needlessly from didn't need to do where the action was omitted.
Jebakan Umum yang Harus Dihindari
Using mustn't have done to deduce that something did not happen; express negative deduction with couldn't have or can't have done.

How to read this B2 topic
At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.
1. Decide what is foregrounded
Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.
What matters is the evidence.
2. Check register
Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.
Not only did she win, but she broke the record.
3. Watch compressed clauses
Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.
Having finished, we left.
Perfect aspect
Perfect forms connect one time to another: earlier to now, earlier to a past point, or duration up to a point.
| Form | Pattern | Core use | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| present perfect | have / has + past participle | past result or experience now | I have finished. |
| present perfect continuous | have / has been + -ing | duration up to now | She has been studying. |
| past perfect | had + past participle | earlier than another past event | They had left before noon. |
| past perfect continuous | had been + -ing | duration before a past point | I had been waiting. |
Contrasts that often decide the answer
Event or background
Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.
I left while she was talking.
Fact or stance
Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.
This may indicate a problem.
Clause or compressed phrase
Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.
Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Pengecualian
Needn't have done contrasts sharply with didn't need to do. We needn't have rushed means we expended effort rushing, but arrived to discover it was completely unnecessary. We didn't need to rush usually implies that because there was plenty of time, we didn't bother rushing.
Kesalahan umum
Substituting must not have for impossibility deduction. In British English and standard grammar, She must not have seen me indicates a guess about non-action rather than impossible contradiction; the true opposite of must have is cannot have or could not have. Another common error is writing could of or should of instead of could have or should have.
Uji dirimu
Analyze three historical decisions and formulate one critique with should have and one retrospective deduction with must have for each.
