Fiodor Dostoïevski publie Crime et Châtiment en russe en 1866. Rodion Raskolnikov, ancien étudiant logé dans une mansarde de Saint-Pétersbourg, est pauvre, orgueilleux et à moitié malade. Il s'est persuadé qu'un être d'exception peut enfreindre la loi au nom d'un bien supérieur, et il projette de tuer une vieille prêteuse sur gages. Le roman suit ensuite son esprit, sa famille et un juge d'instruction patient dans les jours qui suivent le crime.

Le lire quand on apprend la langue

Niveau estimé : C1. Gardez en tête qu'il s'agit d'une traduction : vous lisez la version anglaise de Constance Garnett, parue en 1914, donc un anglais britannique du début du XXe siècle, pas d'aujourd'hui. Les noms russes sont un vrai obstacle, car une même personne s'appelle Rodion Romanovitch, Rodia ou Raskolnikov. Les monologues fiévreux demandent de la patience. Six parties et un épilogue, soit 40 chapitres, découpés en 186 parties de dix minutes.
