Charles Dickens publie Le Conte de deux cités en 1859 et le situe entre Londres et Paris, avant et pendant la Révolution française. Le docteur Manette sort de la Bastille après dix-huit ans de captivité, et sa fille Lucie le ramène en Angleterre. Autour d'eux gravitent Charles Darnay, émigré français qui cache son nom de famille, et Sydney Carton, avocat brillant qui n'attend plus rien de lui-même. À Paris, les Defarge tiennent un débit de vin et n'oublient aucune injustice.
