L'anglais forme la question et la négation avec un auxiliaire ; lequel il faut dépend de ce que la phrase contient déjà. Ici tu revois l'inversion de be et des modaux et l'emploi de do/does/did.

Apprentissage rapide

L'anglais forme la question et la négation avec un auxiliaire ; lequel il faut dépend de ce que la phrase possède déjà.

À retenir

  • Une phrase avec be ou un modal s'inverse toute seule : she is late -> is she late.
  • Tout le reste emprunte do, does ou did.
  • Des qu'un auxiliaire apparaît, le verbe principal revient à sa forme de base.

Exemples

  1. 1Do you drink black tea or fresh coffee in the early morning?
  2. 2Does your brother live in central London or in suburban Manchester?

Piège courant à éviter

did marque déjà le passé, donc le verbe qui suit est au present : did you go, et non did you went.

Approfondir

La règle

  1. Start with the verb type

Forming questions and negatives in English is a systematic process governed by verb classification. The first step is identifying what kind of verb the affirmative statement contains:

  2. With be

    (1) Sentences with the Verb BE (am, is, are): Negatives: Add not directly after be.

    • I am not ready
    • He is not at home
    • They are not tired

Questions: Invert the subject and be.

    • Are you ready?
    • Is he at home?

    No auxiliary do is used.

  3. With modal verbs

    (2) Sentences with Modal Verbs (such as CAN): Negatives: Add not.

    • She cannot swim
    • We can't come

Questions: Invert the subject and can.

    • Can you swim?

    No auxiliary do is used.

  4. With every other verb: do

    (3) Sentences with Lexical Action Verbs (Do-Support): Main action verbs cannot invert on their own and cannot attach not directly (saying "I work not" or "Like you apples?" is incorrect). They must borrow the auxiliary verb DO or DOES: Negatives: Subject + do not (don't) / does not (doesn't) + BARE BASE VERB:

    • I don't drink coffee
    • He doesn't eat seafood

Questions: (Wh- word) + DO / DOES + Subject + BARE BASE VERB?: Yes/No Questions:

    • Do you work here?
    • Does she live in Rome?

    Wh- Questions:

    • Where do they study?
    • What time does the lesson start?
  5. The golden rule

The Golden Rule: The auxiliary does or doesn't already carries the third-person singular inflection. Therefore, the lexical main verb always reverts to its bare dictionary base form without -s ("He doesn't like", never "He doesn't likes").

Guide visuel

How to read this A1 topic

At A1, aim for one clear sentence: subject, verb, agreement, and a simple complement.

1. Find the subject

English normally needs an explicit subject before the verb.

It is cold.

2. Check the verb form

Be, have, and third-person -s carry a lot of early grammar.

She works here.

3. Keep a model sentence

Learn one short pattern and swap the words carefully.

I am a student.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Having reviewed the data, we revised the plan.

Exemples

  1. 1Do you drink black tea or fresh coffee in the early morning?
  2. 2Does your brother live in central London or in suburban Manchester?

  4. 4Why does the university library close so early on Friday afternoons?
  5. 5I do not understand this complicated grammar exercise at all.
  6. 6Martin does not drive to work because the downtown traffic is terrible.
  7. 7Are they ready to start the project presentation in the main hall now?
  8. 8Is your mother a registered doctor at the regional public hospital?
  9. 9Can you play the acoustic guitar or do you prefer the piano?
  10. 10What time do you usually wake up on Saturday and Sunday mornings?

Exceptions

Subject Questions: When an interrogative word like who or what serves as the subject of the clause (the entity actually performing the action), do not insert do, does, or did. The sentence maintains standard affirmative word order: "Who lives in that house?" (not "Who does live in that house?"); "What happened here yesterday?" (not "What did happen?"). Preposition Stranding: In natural modern English, prepositions stay at the end of questions: "Who are you waiting for?", "What are you listening to?".
