Past continuous

Le past continuous place une action en cours à un moment du passé ; en général une action plus courte ou un point dans le temps vient la couper. Ici tu revois la structure was/were + -ing et son lien avec le past simple.

Apprentissage rapide

Le past continuous installe une action en cours à un moment du passé, souvent pour qu'une autre action plus courte ou un point dans le temps vienne l'interrompre.

À retenir

  • Pour l'action d'arrière-plan, utilise was ou were + -ing.
  • Pour l'événement court qui s'intercale, utilise le past simple.
  • Cherche while, when, at that moment et les autres signaux d'une scène au passé.

Exemples

  1. 1I was cooking vegetable soup in the kitchen when the doorbell rang.
  2. 2While Mark was studying for his history exam, his brother was sleeping.

Piège courant à éviter

Deux actions au passé n'imposent pas automatiquement le past continuous ; la forme en -ing va à l'action déjà en cours au moment de l'autre événement.

Approfondir

La règle

  1. In progress in the past

The Past Continuous is used to describe actions or situations that were actively in progress at a specific moment in the past. Formula: Subject + was / were + verb-ing.

  2. Was or were

    Form Breakdown:

    (1) Singular subjects (I, he, she, it) take was / was not (wasn't) + verb-ing.

    • I was reading a book at eight o'clock

    (2) Plural subjects and you (you, we, they) take were / were not (weren't) + verb-ing.

    • They were playing football in the afternoon
  3. Interrupted and parallel actions

    Primary Narrative Functions:

    (1) Interrupted Past Actions: Describes a longer continuous background activity interrupted by a sudden, shorter event in the Past Simple:

    • I was walking to the bus stop when it started to pour with rain.

    (2) Parallel Simultaneous Actions: Describes two continuous activities occurring at the same time:

    • While my mother was cooking dinner, my father was setting the table.
  4. An exact moment

    (3) Action at a Specific Point in Time: Demonstrates what was unfolding at an exact hour:

    • At seven o'clock yesterday morning, I was driving to the airport.
  5. When and while

Connecting Words: When introduces the shorter past simple action ("when the phone rang"). While or as introduces the longer continuous background action ("while we were sleeping").

How to read this A2 topic

At A2, the challenge is choosing between similar time frames, pronouns, and quantity patterns.

1. Look for the time clue

Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.

I watched it yesterday.

2. Choose the pattern first

Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

I am going to study.

3. Check word position

Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

I know him well.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Exceptions

Stative Verbs in Narrative Contexts: Verbs describing states, feelings, senses, and mental conditions (know, believe, understand, see, hear, belong, remember) do not take the Past Continuous even when expressing duration: say "I knew him well when I lived in Leeds", never "I was knowing him well". When vs. While Placement: In standard narration, while accompanies the Past Continuous ("While I was reading"), whereas when normally precedes the Past Simple event ("when the doorbell rang").
