How much and how many ask about quantity and price, with how many modifying countable nouns and how much modifying mass nouns.
How much and How many are interrogative phrases used to inquire about quantities, amounts, and prices. The choice between them is determined by whether the queried entity is countable or uncountable: (1) HOW MANY (Countable Quantities): Used exclusively with plural countable nouns to ask about the specific number of separate items: Formula: How many + Plural Countable Noun + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb? Examples: "How many brothers do you have?", "How many foreign languages can she speak?", "How many students are present in the classroom?". (2) HOW MUCH (Uncountable Amounts): Used exclusively with uncountable (mass) nouns to ask about quantity, volume, or degree of substances and abstract concepts: Formula: How much + Uncountable Noun + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb? Examples: "How much water do you drink each day?", "How much homework did the teacher assign?", "How much time do we have before departure?". (3) HOW MUCH (Financial Cost and Price): How much is universally employed to inquire about the price or cost of goods and services, for both singular and plural items: "How much is this cotton shirt?", "How much are those concert tickets?", "How much does that camera cost?".

Exceptions
Omission of Noun in Elliptical Contexts: When the referent is completely obvious from the preceding conversational context, the noun can be omitted after how much or how many: "I bought some fresh oranges." → "How many did you buy?"; "We need some olive oil." → "How much should I pour?". Currency Units vs. Money: While money is uncountable ("How much money do you have?"), individual units of currency are countable ("How many dollars / euros / pounds do you have?").
Erreurs fréquentes
(1) Using how much with countable plurals: "How much apples are there?" → "How many apples are there?" (Countable plurals take how many). (2) Using how many with mass nouns: "How many information do you need?" → "How much information do you need?" (Information is uncountable). (3) Asking price with how many: "How many are these shoes?" (asking cost) → "How much are these shoes?" (Price requires how much).
