Past simple with a time anchor

Aprendizaje rápido

Finished past time anchors fix an action at a completed historical moment, requiring the past simple rather than perfect tenses.

Recuerda

  • Common finished anchors: yesterday, last night, last week, three days ago, in 2021, on Monday.
  • Ago always follows the time period: two weeks ago, ten minutes ago, five years ago.
  • Questions starting with when and what time require the past simple: when did you arrive.

Ejemplos

  1. 1We visited our relatives in Edinburgh three weeks ago.
  2. 2David bought a comfortable new bicycle early yesterday morning.

Error común que evitar

Never combine finished time anchors with the present perfect: say I saw him yesterday, never I have seen him yesterday.

La regla

  1. A finished time needs the past simple

In English, past time anchors are precise temporal expressions that fix an event at a finished, completed historical moment in time. Whenever a clause contains a finished past time anchor, the sentence obligatorily requires the Past Simple tense, never the Present Perfect!

  2. Yesterday, last, ago

    Standard Finished Time Anchors:

    (1) Yesterday and its compounds: yesterday, yesterday morning, yesterday afternoon, yesterday evening (note: the previous night is expressed as last night, not yesterday night).

    (2) Last + time period: last night, last week, last month, last year, last summer, last Tuesday.

    (3) Number + ago: two hours ago, four days ago, three weeks ago, six months ago, ten years ago.

  3. In, on, at and when

    (4) In + finished year, month, or season: in 1998, in 2022, in July, in winter.

    (5) On + finished day or date: on Monday, on May 4th, on New Year's Eve.

    (6) At + specific clock time: at 7:30 AM, at midnight.

    (7) Subordinate when-clauses: "when I was ten years old", "when we visited Rome".

  4. The pattern

Formula: Subject + Past Simple verb + Finished Time Anchor (or fronted: Time Anchor + comma + Subject + Past Simple verb).

Excepciones

Word Order of Ago: The word ago always follows the time span and calculates backwards from the present moment: "ten minutes ago", "two years ago" (never "ago ten minutes" or "before two years"). Question Words that Require Past Simple: Questions beginning with When and What time inherently ask for a specific, finished historical coordinate; they must use the Past Simple: "When did you arrive?" (never "When have you arrived?").
