Frequency adverbs

Aprendizaje rápido

Adverbs of frequency show how often an action happens, following strict placement rules before verbs and after be.

Recuerda

  • Place frequency adverbs before regular verbs: she always arrives early, they usually walk.
  • Place frequency adverbs directly after the verb be: he is always cheerful, we are never late.
  • Between auxiliary and main verbs: you can always call me, I have never visited Rome.

Ejemplos

  1. 1I always drink a fresh glass of water as soon as I wake up.
  2. 2Sarah usually walks to her university classes when the weather is fine.

Error común que evitar

Never place frequency adverbs before the verb be or between a verb and its object: say he is always tired, never he always is tired.

La regla

  1. How often

Adverbs of frequency describe how often an activity takes place. They range along a spectrum of frequency from total consistency to total absence: always (100%), usually / normally (80%), often (60%), sometimes (50%), rarely / seldom (10%), hardly ever (5%), and never (0%).

  2. Before an action verb

    Placement Rules:

    (1) Before Regular Action Verbs: The adverb stands immediately between the subject and the main verb: Subject + Adverb + Verb.

    • I always drink tea in the morning
    • She often visits the library
    • We rarely watch television
  3. After be

    (2) After the Verb BE: When be is the main verb, the adverb stands immediately after it: Subject + BE + Adverb.

    • He is always on time
    • They are never rude
    • The bus is usually crowded
  4. Between a helper and the main verb

    (3) Between Auxiliary and Main Verbs: In compound verb structures (with do, have, can, will), the adverb sits between the auxiliary and the principal verb: Subject + Auxiliary + Adverb + Verb.

    • You can always count on me
    • I have never seen the ocean
    • She doesn't often eat meat

How to read this A2 topic

At A2, the challenge is choosing between similar time frames, pronouns, and quantity patterns.

1. Look for the time clue

Yesterday, now, every day, already, and since often decide the tense.

I watched it yesterday.

2. Choose the pattern first

Pick the whole grammar structure before choosing the final word.

I am going to study.

3. Check word position

Adverbs, objects, and pronouns must sit in natural English order.

I know him well.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Contrasts that often decide the answer

Event or background

Simple forms move events forward; continuous forms show an action in progress.

I left while she was talking.

Fact or stance

Modals, hedges, and reporting structures show how certain or responsible the speaker sounds.

This may indicate a problem.

Clause or compressed phrase

Advanced writing often compresses full clauses into participle, noun, or prepositional phrases.

Excepciones

Position Flexibility with Sometimes and Usually: Unlike always and never, sometimes can also open or close a clause ("Sometimes we go to the beach on Sundays", "We go to the beach sometimes"), and usually can open one ("Usually, we eat at home on Fridays"). Negative Adverbs (Never, Rarely, Seldom): These words already carry negative meaning; therefore, do NOT use them with a negative verb (avoid double negatives: say "I never eat meat", never "I don't never eat meat").

Errores frecuentes

  • Placing frequency adverbs before the verb be

    Error

He always is late for class.

    Correcto

He is always late for class.

    Frequency adverbs follow be.

  • Splitting a verb from its direct object

    Error

    She reads often books.

    Correcto

    She often reads books.

Adverbs precede the verb, not between verb and object.

  • Double negatives with never

    Error

    I don't never drink coffee.

    Correcto

    I never drink coffee.

    Never already negates the clause.
