Articles and nouns

Los artículos ingleses (a, an, the) muestran si un sustantivo es uno más entre muchos, uno concreto que el oyente puede identificar o una categoría general. Aquí trabajas a/an, the y la ausencia de artículo.

Aprendizaje rápido

Los artículos muestran si un sustantivo es uno entre muchos, uno concreto que el oyente puede identificar o una categoría general.

Recuerda

  • a y an presentan algo nuevo y contable: I bought a lamp.
  • the señala algo ya identificable: the lamp is broken.
  • Sin artículo con plurales e incontables en afirmaciones generales: lamps are cheap.

Ejemplos

  1. 1I bought a fresh sandwich and an apple for lunch at the bakery.
  2. 2The sandwich was delicious, but the apple was slightly sour.

Error común que evitar

a y the suelen ser las dos gramaticales; lo que decide es la frase alrededor del sustantivo. Si nada ha presentado aún el sustantivo, the suele estar mal.

Profundiza

La regla

  1. Three choices

Articles tell the listener whether you are referring to something general or something specific. English has three possibilities:

  2. A and an

    (1) Indefinite Article (A / An): Used with singular countable nouns when introducing an item for the first time or referring to any member of a group.

    • I bought a book
    • She ate an apple

Use A before consonant sounds: a pen, a house, a table, a university (the letter 'u' produces the /j/ consonant sound), a European city. Use AN before vowel sounds: an egg, an orange, an umbrella, an hour (the letter 'h' is completely silent), an honest person.

  3. The

    (2) Definite Article (The): Used with singular, plural, or uncountable nouns when both speaker and listener know which specific entity is meant. This happens when the item was already mentioned ("I bought a shirt and a hat. The shirt is blue"), when unique in the world ("the sun", "the moon"), or identified by context ("the front door").

  4. No article

    (3) Zero Article (No article): Used with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns when making general statements:

    • Cats are friendly animals
    • Milk contains calcium
    • Music brings joy
  5. Plural nouns

Plural nouns: Most nouns add -s (books, cars). Nouns ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh add -es (buses, boxes, matches). Nouns ending in consonant + y change to -ies (cities). Irregular plurals must be memorized: child → children, person → people, man → men, woman → women, tooth → teeth.

How to read this A1 topic

At A1, aim for one clear sentence: subject, verb, agreement, and a simple complement.

1. Find the subject

English normally needs an explicit subject before the verb.

It is cold.

2. Check the verb form

Be, have, and third-person -s carry a lot of early grammar.

She works here.

3. Keep a model sentence

Learn one short pattern and swap the words carefully.

I am a student.

Articles and quantity

English articles depend on countability, specificity, and whether the listener can identify the noun.

MeaningCount singularCount pluralUncountable
first mentiona booksome bookssome water

generala tiger / the tigertigerswater
negative quantityno book / not a bookno books / not any booksno water / not any water

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Ejemplos

  1. 1I bought a fresh sandwich and an apple for lunch at the bakery.
  2. 2The sandwich was delicious, but the apple was slightly sour.
  3. 3We visited an interesting art museum in the city center on Friday.

  9. 9Music helps many busy people relax after a long working day.
  10. 10Three women and four men waited patiently at the airport gate.

Excepciones

Proper names of individual countries, cities, and streets take no article (Spain, Tokyo, Baker Street). However, countries that are plural or political unions require the (the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands). Meals take no article in general usage ("have breakfast", "eat lunch"). Fixed institutional locations also drop the article in phrases of function: "at school", "at work", "at home", "in bed", and "go home".

Errores frecuentes

  • Choosing a or an by spelling instead of sound

    I bought a new shoes.

    Correcto

    I bought new shoes.

A and an mean one and cannot modify plural nouns.

  • Generic overuse of the

    Error

    The life is wonderful.

    Correcto

    Life is wonderful.

General uncountable concepts take zero article.
