Determiners and articles

Die Regel

Determiners and articles calibrate specificity, distribution, duality, and generic classification across singular, plural, and uncountable nouns.

Determiners define the reference, scope, and quantity of nominal expressions. At B2, mastery involves subtle distributional and generic uses. Distributive determiners each and every both modify singular countable nouns and take singular agreement, but differ in emphasis: each focuses on members of a set individually (Each student presented their own project), whereas every generalizes across all members of a group as a whole (Every room has been inspected). Dual determiners apply strictly to sets of two: both is plural affirmative (Both proposals are viable), either indicates one or the other (You can take either route), and neither negates both alternatives affirmatively (Neither solution is satisfactory). In generic statements, three distinct structures represent an entire class: (1) Zero article with plural count nouns or uncountable nouns (Whales are mammals; Water is essential), (2) The definite article with a singular count noun in scientific, botanical, or formal contexts (The smartphone has transformed modern commerce), and (3) The indefinite article to represent an arbitrary representative of a category (A nurse must remain patient under stress).

Merk dir

  • Apply distributive determiners: each treats individuals separately; every considers the whole collective group; both require singular verbs.
  • Distinguish dual determiners: either offers a choice between two; neither negates both options and requires an affirmative verb.
  • Deploy generic reference using the definite article with singular countable nouns to designate a representative class or scientific type.

Häufige Falle, die du vermeiden solltest

Creating double negatives with neither, as in neither candidate didn't qualify; write neither candidate qualified.

How to read this B2 topic

At B2, the form often changes the focus: agent, emphasis, register, implication, or stance.

1. Decide what is foregrounded

Passive, cleft, inversion, and participle clauses all move attention.

What matters is the evidence.

2. Check register

Some options are grammatical but too informal, too heavy, or unnatural.

Not only did she win, but she broke the record.

3. Watch compressed clauses

Advanced English often removes repeated subjects and auxiliaries.

Having finished, we left.

Articles and quantity

English articles depend on countability, specificity, and whether the listener can identify the noun.

Decision path before answering

Use these checks before choosing between close options.

  1. 1Mark the subject, main verb, object, and any connector.
  2. 2Underline the time expression or discourse clue.
  3. 3Reject any option with the wrong agreement, tense, article, pronoun case, or word order.
  4. 4Read the whole sentence once more for naturalness and register.

Beispiele

  1. 1Each applicant must submit a portfolio of original creative work alongside their formal resume.
  2. 2Every candidate who sat the written examination received an official notification within ten days.
  3. 3Both proposals presented at the executive summit demonstrated solid financial planning and feasibility.
  4. 4You may choose either training date according to your personal availability next month.
  5. 5Neither explanation offered by the defense counsel satisfied the presiding magistrate.
  6. 6The blue whale is recognized as the largest mammal ever to have inhabited the planet.
  7. 7A successful entrepreneur must demonstrate resilience in the face of unexpected market fluctuations.
  8. 8Neither of the two experimental medications produced adverse side effects in clinical trials.
  9. 9Each of the historic manuscripts was preserved in an individual climate-controlled storage capsule.

Ausnahmen

While neither strictly takes a singular verb in formal writing (Neither of the candidates has accepted), in informal spoken English, plural agreement is frequent (Neither of them have arrived). In competitive exams and formal academic registers, singular agreement remains required.

Häufige Fehler

Using neither with a negative verb (Neither of them couldn't attend - correct is Neither of them could attend), or using every to refer to a group of only two (Every of my parents - correct is Both of my parents). Another frequent mistake is omitting the definite article when making generic scientific statements (Cheetah is fastest land mammal instead of The cheetah is the fastest land mammal).

Teste dich selbst

Draft a descriptive passage characterizing a team of two and an entire department using each, every, either, neither, and both.
